...and with her PJ's on

Hello,I am the Lincolnshire Coordinator for Little Hen Rescue who rescue and rehome ex battery hens when the farmers discard them in favour of younger birds. These hens are only just over a year old and have spent their life in the space of an A4 sheet of paper in a wire based cage with 4-6 other birds and when they are rescued, they have feathers missing, broken toes, damaged wings, arthritic joints, peritonitis and crush injuries. They are also barbarically debeaked with a hot blade as chicks to supposedly stop them pecking each other but this can cause lifetime deformities. WE DO NOT REHOME ILL BIRDS!Besides all the negatives, many are healthy birds. The healthy birds will have feathers missing and often long floppy combs as they regulate their body heat through their combs and the battery farms are very hot places.Rescuing these hens is with the help and agreement of the farmers involved and we couldn't do it without them.We do have one predicament though of a mammoth scale. We need to rehome 11,000 hens by the 29th June and if we cannot get them all, the rest are destined for slaughter and end up as "mechanically recovered meat" as there is actually so little meat on their bones. There is such a high interest in rehoming ex battery hens these days, after television programmes by Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall and Jamie Oliver but many people do not know where to start regarding getting themselves a few for the garden. These hens still lay eggs, although their supply does lessen as they age. They can live for many more years. They are fascinating to watch, don't make much noise and the pleasure gained from watching them go from tufty little girls into beautiful well feathered ladies is immense. The first time they look at the sky to see a bird or aeroplane fly past, or walk on grass then gravel and feel the different textures on their feet, it's beautiful to see. These ladies are only to be rehomed as pets. People must regard the eggs purely as a bonus and if they can no longer keep them for any reason, Little Hen rescue will take them back without passing any judgement whatsoever.LHR ask a minimum donation of £1.50 per bird and currently the closest collection point is Sutton Bridge in Lincolnshire BUT if there is enough interest, we will set up a collection point in your area. (http://www.tinyurl.com/lhrsb )We have found though that people are happy to travel to save these girls.I am hoping that you could possibly do an article highlighting the plight of these hens and if you wish, I can send pictures of how some birds look on coming out from the farms. I didn't want to add an attachment in case this email to yourself was rejected. Please see our Norfolk website Homeand also my own site with details more for Lincolnshire (regarding suppliers of housing etc)Anyone interested needs to view the websites to see if they can cater for the needs of these hens, regarding housing and diet and if they would still like to rehome some, please email me (Lyn) on lincslittlehens@aol.com for Sutton Bridge collection (possibly your area too) or Jo on littlehenrescue@aol.com for Norwich collectionLittle Hen Rescue was originally started in June/July last year by Jo Eglen of Norwich and has currently rehomed almost 9000 hens in total. Our biggest mass rescue so far has been for 3000 hens so you can appreciate what a task lays ahead. Please, if you can help in any way or even sponsor a crate to help us rescue more hens, we would be grateful. If you can circulate the information about the plight of these hens it will help us reach that target of 11000 hens and enable us to not leave any behind, looking at us, hoping for their turn to come to freedom.
**** OUR BIGGEST APPEAL EVER ****
Homes needed for 11,000 Battery hens by 29th June!!
Please help us spread the word! Add us to your websites and forums, add us to your local newsletters!
We are the Rays of Sunshine and we care for many small unfortunate animals. We are non profit making family run organisation.
We run on less than a shoestring budget (which means everything is mainly paid for by ourselves) We pay NO wages or salaries to anyone and receive nothing ourselves. Our reward is seeing rescued animals healthy and happy. This has always been our ethos.
We have an enormous outstanding vets bill but animals are our passion. We love everything! We are just a family concern with a few friends and family who volunteer their time as animal fosterers and update our main website and this blog to help us out.
We are NOT a registered charity yet, but are currently considering whether it would benefit the animals to become a charity. EVERYTHING must benefit the animals for us to consider it. Currently paperwork takes up a lot of time and I have a feeling that gaining charitable status may add to it.
We keep rescued guinea pigs at our home and at the homes of our dedicated Guinea Pig fosterers. We are currently responsible for around 30 cavies (always fluctuates as they come and go) and many other animals too.
Our intention is to never turn a desperate animal away. We receive no money for this and rely totally on donations of food and other items from kind animal lovers. We prefer you donate the items direct to us such as food, bedding, shredded paper, old newspapers, bowls, cages etc...rather than cash. Alternatively, please buy our items for sale on eBay. Please see the links below for our webshop and ebay ID.
For guinea pigs/snail etc, please contact us by email on rosahrescue@aol.com
or if no reply, email lincslittlehens@aol.com
Our contact number is 0845 017 9422. If you get diverted to the answerphone, please leave a message. We do not accept anonymous/withheld numbers and we do not return calls to people who hang up without leaving a message.

Click HERE to see where the Sutton Bridge collection point is. Times MUST be pre arranged as this is just a side road off the A17 with no facilities other than safety from passing heavy traffic. The hens will just be brought to this point to meet with you so please be prompt to your agreed collection time.
We will be happy to clip claws and discuss and worries or concerns you may have and we ALWAYS carry rehoming packs in our vehicle to help you ensure your hens settle in easier.
If you require any food for your hens, please order when booking your hens. A 20kg sack of layers meal (mash) which they are used to eating is £7. You can gradually introduce new foods once your hens have settled in.

IMPORTANT!!
IF YOU FIND AN ANIMAL INJURED OR SICK & IT NEEDS URGENT MEDICAL HELP, YOU MUST CALL THE RSPCA EMERGENCY LINE ON 0300 1234 9999 (24 HOURS A DAY) NOT RoSAH RESCUE AS WE WILL BE UNABLE TO HELP YOU WITH EMERGENCY VET BILLS AS OUR OWN VET BILL STANDS AT ALMOST £1000 AND WITH NO CURRENT FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES WE ARE ONLY ABLE TO PAY IT OFF IN VERY SMALL AMOUNTS, AS & WHEN WE CAN.
Send a virtual ex battery hen to your friends via this Facebook application. All these hens are real and living with us in Lincolnshire.
Please also become a fan of this application so we can spread the word about the poor conditions of the battery hens. The illnesses we discover some of these hens have upon being rescued, and the fact that these ill hens have been supplying YOUR eggs.
If it is impossible to keep a few hens of your own, buy free range or organic eggs or even better, buy from someone who keeps a few hens at home and sells eggs from their gate as you know the hens will be pets and be healthy.
